Shortly after the publication of the first prospectus, the first legal proceedings for “aiding and abetting fornication” began. Numerous other lawsuits followed, some of which continued until shortly before Beate Rotermund-Uhse’s death (2001).

In order to expand the product range and be independent and innovative at the same time, the mail-order company took over a pharmaceutical laboratory for the manufacture of preparations in the following years. The erotic company also worked with photography and film companies as well as a women’s lingerie studio.

In the mid-1950s, the mail-order company’s sales rose to over one million German marks. And so Beate Rotermund-Uhse founded the first sex shop in Flensburg in 1962: “Institute for Marriage Hygiene”. In addition to books and contraceptives, the specialist shop also sold lingerie and stimulation items.

Over the years, the company grew more and more. The main goals remained the de-tabooing of contraception as well as sexual education itself.

The corona crisis hits German condom manufacturers: The pandemic initially increased sales. However, with prostitution, an important market has completely collapsed.

At the beginning of the Corona crisis, Germans not only stocked up with toilet paper and pasta, but also with condoms. The condom manufacturer Ritex from Bielefeld, for example, reported a doubling of sales in March compared to the same month last year.

Were these just hamster purchases or do couples have more sex because they spend more time at home due to the corona? And do singles forego intimate dates because of the distance rule? There are no studies on this yet, but the sales figures of the three manufacturers in Germany provide some kill a mockingbird analysis

In Sarstedt, south of Hanover, production at CPR runs around the clock, around eight condoms are produced per second. A total of 7,000 glass molds are immersed in liquid rubber, the latex film settles on the glasses and becomes solid. Finally, the rubbers are brushed off, washed and packaged.

Prostitution makes up a significant share of the condom market

The company produces its own brands for drugstores and grocery stores and has its own online shop. “Since Corona we have noticed an increased demand there, but prostitution has completely broken down,” reports CPR managing director Michael Kesselring. He estimates that sex for sale makes up around 20 percent of the condom market in Germany. He does not currently see any delivery problems for the German market.

On the other hand, the production facilities in Asia could face problems due to the corona pandemic. “There is mainly produced for development aid.”

Kesselring founded his company in 1987. At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, condoms were the “product of the hour”, like face masks or disinfectants today. In the meantime, business has become more difficult and, in Kesselring’s opinion, one cannot achieve high growth rates.

CPR has been in bankruptcy for almost a year. This is a banking problem that will be resolved soon, says the 57-year-old. CPR also has a plant in Erfurt and one in Honduras in Central America. In Honduras, there is no end in sight to the shutdown.

Hamster purchases at the start of the pandemic

According to Ritex managing director Robert Richter, a quarter of condoms nationwide are used in prostitution. The Ritex brand, however, is predominantly active in the retail sector and has buyers from their mid-twenties who tend to be in permanent partnerships. These would most likely have made inventory purchases at the beginning of the crisis. “I suspect that couples in permanent partnerships also had more sex, otherwise the sales figures would have to collapse now,” says the 39-year-old. According to Richter, however, they are still in the single-digit range over the same month last year.

The Mapa company in Zeven between Bremen and Hamburg produces, among other things, the Billy Boy brand. It assumes hamster purchases at the beginning of the pandemic, followed by lower sales due to the lockdown. In the meantime everything is settling back into the usual regions, they say.

According to a representative study by the Federal Center for Health Education on contraceptive behavior from 2018, 47 percent of sexually active women and men use the pill, 46 percent the condom. Seven years earlier, only 37 percent named the condom. According to the study, especially those under 30 have an increasingly critical attitude towards hormonal contraceptive methods. Protection against sexually transmitted infections is also important to the respondents when using condoms.

“We can work very efficiently”

“The use of condoms has become normal and is seen as a sign of responsibility,” says Richter. Although labor and production costs are high in Germany, the high degree of automation helps. “We can work very efficiently.” According to Richter, “Made in Germany” also speaks for Germany.

Condoms are medical devices. “The problem with online trading is that a lot of goods, some of which are of inferior quality, are entering Germany from the Far East,” says the Ritex boss. You should stay away from suspiciously cheap products.

Deutscher invented the latex condom

According to its own statements, CPR is the largest condom manufacturer in Europe, ahead of Ritex and Mapa. The location Germany has historical reasons.

It is true that an American, Charles Goodyear, developed the process of vulcanization, invented the car tire and made the first condom out of rubber. However, Julius Fromm from Berlin perfected the process at the beginning of the 20th century and created the latex condom. The Jewish factory owner, harassed by the National Socialists, had to sell his company to the godmother Hermann Görings, which was far below its value, and in 1938 emigrated to London.

More than in the financial crisis: Number of short-time workers reaches record level Despite hamster purchases: Toilet paper manufacturer Ille is making sales losses Overweight, erectile dysfunction: This happens when you don’t have sex

The trend today is ecologically sustainable and vegan condoms – this may have been promoted by the Berlin start-up Einhorn. Other manufacturers now also offer condoms for which the natural rubber plantations are certified by the FSC organization, i.e. meet high social and ecological standards.

The cytomegaly virus (CMV) is the number one cause of harm to children during pregnancy. There is still no vaccination against the pathogen. For years, medicine has been looking for therapies to get the disease under control. Better education of pregnant women can significantly reduce the risk of infection.

Carmina Leitner was infected with CMV ten years ago in the womb. She was born in the sixth month of pregnancy. Her spleen and liver were way too big. Her lungs were threatened with bursting with inflammation. Still, Carmina was lucky. “The virus did not get into the cerebral water and did not cause any neurological defects,” says her mother Sabine Leitner. Today Carmina is significantly lighter than her peers and has developed about two years ago, but “otherwise she is doing pretty well,” says Sabine Leitner. She had never heard of CMV before she was affected. Ten years ago she founded the only self-help group in Germany and is the contact person for around 1,600 families seeking advice.

The clinical picture is diverse

Almost every second German is infected with the cytomegaly virus. The CMV belongs to the herpes virus family, but has nothing to do with the annoying lip sores. It is a little-known but all the more dangerous threat to unborn children, says microbiologist Christina Paulus from the University of Regensburg, whose team has been working intensively with the virus for ten years. Almost all CMV-related diseases have in common that pronounced acute and chronic inflammatory reactions occur in the infected organs. The clinical picture is diverse and ranges from hearing impairments to multiple severe disabilities, says Leitner. In addition, the virus is known for sometimes life-threatening complications in immunocompromised transplant patients.

Contagion dangerous during pregnancy

The dangers for the unborn child are greater if the expectant mother becomes infected for the first time during pregnancy. It is estimated that this happens unnoticed to around 1,500 young women every year. 30 to 40 percent of pregnant women transmit the virus to their own child, says Regensburg researcher Michael Nevels. 40 children die each year, at least 660 struggle with the consequences of the disease for a lifetime.

CMV infection mostly goes unnoticed

Like all herpes viruses, CMV hides lifelong in the human body after the initial infection and is usually in a kind of dormant state from which it can be “reactivated” almost at any time. Few people notice an infection that occurs through human excretions such as saliva or urine, since signs of illness such as fever rarely occur with normal immune function. The most common source of infection for young women are day care centers. According to the German Green Cross, every fifth kindergarten child under three years of age is infected and excretes the pathogens for months without any visible signs of illness. The pathogens can survive for hours on soiled surfaces.

This is how pregnant women can prevent

Objects and surfaces contaminated with urine or saliva should be cleaned thoroughly with a degreasing agent. It is also advisable not to kiss on the mouth and cheek for pregnant women, infants and young children. You should also not share dishes or other objects with them that could get saliva or urine.

Education can save lives

There is extensive medical help for those affected – but many do not even know that they are infected. Gynecologists should definitely educate pregnant women about the dangers. According to a French study, half of the cases could be avoided if pregnant women were informed about sources of infection, says Leitner. The CMV test costs around 25 euros and usually has to be paid for yourself, but some health insurance companies already cover it.

Have regular CMV tests

Pregnant women with no CMV antibodies in their blood should get tested about every six weeks. If a pregnant woman does not carry the virus, it should be retested every four to six weeks. This is especially true for pregnant women who have professional or private contact with babies and toddlers

In the case of infections, there has so far only been the option of providing a certain protection against damage by administering immunoglobulins. “Unlike years ago, affected families are now receiving very good medical care,” says Leitner.

No vaccination in sight

So far it has not been possible to develop effective vaccination protection. “Due to the enormous complexity of the virus and its interactions with our body, the mechanisms of disease development are still largely unknown,” emphasizes researcher Paulus. Research has long been neglected, but there has been a rethink in recent years. “There will be a breakthrough in research in the next few years,” she is sure.
